Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling
When it comes to skin care, chances are you’ve already heard of microneedling, which has been around since the mid-1990s. Perhaps you’ve also heard of radiofrequency (RF) therapy. Both approaches aim to stimulate cellular turnover deep under the skin. When used together – in a treatment called radiofrequency (RF) microneedling – this aesthetic procedure can pack a powerful, anti-aging punch.
RF Microneedling: a Nonsurgical Face-Lift
Radiofrequency microneedling combines the best of two distinct procedures:
- Microneedling involves creating tiny punctures in the skin – controlled damage, essentially – that stimulates the natural healing process deep under your skin. Brand-new skin cells ultimately replace damaged, wrinkled, or unevenly textured skin.
- Radiofrequency skin care treatments send energy waves through the skin to heat the dermis, one of the deeper layers of your skin. This stimulates the production of collagen, which helps to tighten and smooth the skin.
RF microneedling is much more effective than either procedure alone. It’s also much more convenient, immediate, less costly, and doesn’t require a recovery period typical of a surgical face-lift.
What to Expect
During a RF microneedling treatment, your UniMed Center provider will gently and slowly move a hand-held device over the skin on your face. The device creates teeny tiny punctures in the skin and delivers radio waves into the area, enhancing the effects of the microneedling and triggering cellular turnover deep under the skin. In a way, RF microneedling harnesses your body’s natural healing abilities to rejuvenate your skin in a targeted, efficient manner. The entire procedure generally takes less than an hour to complete.
Radiofrequency microneedling is used to reduce wrinkles, scarring, saggy skin, large pores, and more.
FAQs: RF Microneedling
In many cases, you may notice a difference after your first treatment. However, the effects are improved with repeat treatment sessions – and most noticeable after a few months, as smooth and tight new skin cells begin to replace the old, damaged skin cells.
Most patients report minimal discomfort during a radiofrequency microneedling treatment. There are numerous ways we can help ensure you remain comfortable during the procedure, including the use of a topical anesthetic before we begin and a solution afterward designed to sooth your skin and reduce any lingering discomfort.
It depends on your goals of treatment. Often, multiple treatment sessions are required to achieve the desired results. These are typically scheduled 4-6 weeks apart.
You are free to resume your usual activities following a RF microneedling treatment.
You may notice some redness and irritation after a radiofrequency microneedling treatment. However, this is temporary and should quickly go away. Follow the advice of your UniMed Center provider about after-care, which may include avoiding wearing makeup for a day, using a gentle skin cleanser, and staying out of the sun for a period of time.
