Botox® and Dermal Fillers
Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with dermal fillers and Botox® Cosmetic in East Brunswick, New Jersey.
Frown lines and wrinkles around the eyes and forehead are hard to avoid with age, but specialized anti-aging therapies can reduce the appearance of these common signs of aging.
Dr. Jenny Liu offers Botox injections and dermal fillers to reduce wrinkles and create a more youthful appearance.
What is Botox?
Botox is a specialized serum produced from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. When injected, Botox relaxes the muscles that create fine lines and wrinkles on the skin.
In addition to reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles, Botox serves a number of alternative medicine purposes, including:
- Reduction in underarm sweating
- Reduction of severe neck and shoulder pain
- Migraine relief
- Treatment for uncontrollable blinking
- Treatment for misaligned eyes
Botox injections work by controlling impulses from the nerves to the muscles at the injection site, ultimately causing them to relax. The effects of a single Botox treatment session will last between three to six months, depending on the area being treated.
Potential side effects of Botox include:
- Dry eyes
- Redness around the injection site
- Drooping eyelids
- Excessive tearing
- Uneven facial proportions
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injected in a similar fashion to Botox, but they work to reduce lines and wrinkles in a different way. These anti-aging injections use gel-like, fat-based substances to add volume to the facial tissues beneath the skin, ultimately providing a smoother appearance that is free of folds, lines, and wrinkles. They can also be used for scar reduction. Dermal fillers are also known as “facial fillers” and are sometimes referred to as a “liquid facelift.”
There are several types of dermal fillers, including:
- Collagen
- Hyaluronic acid
- Calcium hydroxylapatite
- Polylactic acid
- PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate)
These components can temporarily reshape certain facial features while restoring the essential elements of the dermis that give skin its youthful appearance. The type of filler used will determine how long the effects of treatment last.
Potential side effects of dermal fillers include:
- Pain at the injection site
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Infection
- Allergic reaction to the injected material
- Sub-dermal shifting
Anti-Aging Injections: What to Expect
Botox injections and dermal fillers take different approaches to reducing wrinkles, but the injection process for both is quick and requires no downtime. Dr. Liu will first administer a local anesthetic to the injection site to reduce pain and irritation during the process. You can expect to return to your normal activities immediately following your therapy session.
Risks and complications associated with anti-aging injections are rare. When side effects do develop, they are often mild and generally fade shortly after the injection. Following Dr. Liu’s instructions and having the injections completed by a certified professional will reduce your risk of developing side effects after your treatment session.
Treatment with dermal fillers and Botox injections must be repeated regularly to maintain the result. Wrinkles and fine lines will gradually return after treatment sessions have stopped.
